Labor Day has a deeper meaning than an end to summer and marks a pivotal moment in U.S. labor history, including a violent start.
Other retailers also are holding sales for the holiday weekend. Labor Day is a federal holiday dedicated to the achievements of American workers and held annually on the first Monday of September.
Unlike Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving, most major retailers are typically open Labor Day with one super-sized exception. All Costco Wholesale clubs are closed Monday like they are for New Year’s Day, Easter, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
However, amid the coronavirus pandemic, what businesses will be open Monday – and their hours – can vary depending on where you live. Several will have special holiday hours and many pharmacies will be closed.

According to data from Womply, a small business software provider, 15% of stores are still closed.
“Retailers have been hit hard by the pandemic and are eager to stimulate sales,” said Brad Plothow, vice president of corporate marketing and communications for Womply. “Be sure to check with your favorite shop to see if they’re offering promotions, delivery, or curbside pickup.”

Minnesota-based Red Wing Shoe Company is transforming over 525 of its stores into hubs for people to search for local trade jobs Monday and is switching its customer service line, 800-RED-WING, “into a job search hotline to offer both free guidance as well to help connect the unemployed to more open positions.”
Michigan-based workwear brand Carhartt also is closing its retail stores and U.S. manufacturing facilities for the third year in a row.

Since May, Ascena Retail Group, parent company of Justice, Ann Taylor and Lane Bryant, New York & Company‘s parent company RTW Retailwinds, Lucky Brand, J.C. Penney, Brooks Brothers, Sur La Table, Neiman Marcus, Tuesday Morning, Tailored Brands, GNC, Lord + Taylor and J. Crew have all filed for Chapter 11.
As of Sunday, there were only 118 remaining Justice stores listed on the retailer’s website. Before Ascena filed for bankruptcy in July, the tween brand had 826 specialty retail and outlet stores geared toward girls 6 to 12.
Most of the stores that have filed for bankruptcy are no longer taking store gift cards or accepting returns.
Time is running out to use gift cards for off-price retailer Stein Mart. The last day to use gift cards and merchandise credits is Sept. 21 and reward certificates expire on Sept. 12.
